Every spring the Irons boys get all the kids from Hanalei together for the annual Irons Brothers Pine Trees Classic. This year marked another successful extravaganza. A free contest for anybody old enough to drag a longboard down to the shore, with prizes galore, kids ended the day walking away with inter-island airline tickets, backpacks, boardbag, boards, shoes and just about anything else you see stocked in your local surf shop. Oh yeah, Tamba was also down there grinding out free shave ice for everyone, so yes, it was a truly Hawaiian affair. Cheers to another good year boys!

What started as a small way to give back seven years ago has turned into an all-out Islands gathering for the kids who are just starting to get their feet wet. The Irons Brothers Pine Trees Classic isn’t about rewarding the kids who already have multi-year contracts and multiple national titles under their belts, it’s about giving the starters a nudge of encouragement. As if to say, “Hey, if we can do it, so can you.” This year’s event, held this weekend, was no different as the seventh installment of the Irons Brothers Classic went off without a hitch. Here are some priceless moments, courtesy of SURFING photographer Hank.

So plan well worth trip to Hanalei, Kauai to experience a great surfing event full of local talent, fun, and excitement. Hanalei Vacation Rentals are available ranging from affordable to luxury. Experience the Pine Trees Beach Villa on Hanalei Bay owned by Andy Irons. Families enjoy this special gathering every year. Here you will get a chance to meet Pro Surfers, Andy and Bruce Irons as well as some well-known legendary local surfers. Perhaps, you will want to learn how to surf. There are many talented surf instructors available for private surf lessons. You’ll be amazed how fun it is to be out in the ocean & surfing a beautiful wave. They say ‘One a surfer knows the feeling’….

The road ends at Ke’e Beach and the famed Kalalau Trailhead. Driving this rural, curvy road that sometimes hugs the coast and sometimes affords lofty views high upon the bluff, you learn patience and you learn to take your time.Kauai is the most unhurried of the four main Hawaiian Islands. If you insist on living life at mainland pace, you’ll miss the point. And this brings me to the single-lane bridges. The two-lane road simply collapses into a single lane at numerous bridges. Here’s what you do. First, you’re hopefully not driving more than 25 or 30 miles per hour. As you approach the bridge, if there are no cars approaching from the other direction, you’re free to go. Once you’re on the bridge, any opposing traffic will (there’s really no choice here) wait for you to cross. If a car is already on the bridge coming towards you, you wait behind the point that the road becomes a single lane. This is where the etiquette part kicks in. Drivers are not expected to alternate—that would slow things and produce confusion. Instead, cars considered in the flow are expected to cross with the lead car. Perhaps 3 or 5 cars will go. When this number starts to grow large, a polite Kauaian will defer to the opposing traffic and become first in line for the next crossing. Now, as you wait, you see that there indeed is an end to the stream of automobiles advancing over the bridge. After the last one passes, you can cross. While you were waiting, chances are others have lined up behind you. They too have become part of the flow and will cross with you. Much of the time, the entire line of waiting cars will proceed across the bridge. If a straggling car now approaches the bridge, there is an obvious break in the flow. A polite driver will recognize this and stop so that the opposing traffic, still waiting, can proceed. Amazingly enough, this works pretty well, but with 6 or 7 bridges, you can see how your travel time the last 6 miles of the highway is slow. And that’s partially the point. If you can’t slow down your pace and take your turn, well, politely speaking, you should just probably stay at a resort in the airport city of Lihue. But for those who want to see the end of the world, one-lane bridges are a great introduction to island life.

The holidays can be quite busy but they are often a time when people travel to see family and friends or to take a vacation. Following these basic tips will help make sure you have the best time when you are traveling during this time of year. Being prepared for things to go wrong is the first step in minimizing the damages and getting on with your vacation travel plans.Make sure you have all of your tickets and confirmation numbers in a specific place. It is a good idea to make a copy of the information as well as the contact number for your tickets and place it in another location. This way if you lose the originals you will have all the necessary information to take care of it. You should call 7 days before your travel dates to make sure your reservation is still active for all modes of transportation and your accommodations. It is common for flights, trains, and buses to get delayed over the holidays due to security issues, weather, and trying to meet the needs of the volumes of people using such modes of transportation over the holidays. Ensure you have enough of cash, food, drinks, and necessities to get you through these delays. They can range from a couple of hours to a few days. If you will be traveling a long distance you should consider bringing with you games to pass the time, especially if you are traveling with young children. If you take prescription medications you need to make sure you have them clearly labeled. You may get questioned about them if they aren’t in the bottle you picked them up at from the pharmacy. It is a good idea to have a written note from your doctor regarding the medication as well. Makes sure you have enough of it for the entire vacation including any delays that may occur.Lost luggage is one of the biggest problems when people travel, and it compounds during the holidays because of how busy everyone is. While you really cannot prevent your baggage from getting lost, you can do your best to make sure you have all you need in the mean time. Ensure each person traveling has clothing in all of the suitcases instead of making one for each person. This way everyone will have a chance to have some items should a bag or two get lost in the shuffle.Make sure you identify your luggage clearly so that you will be sure to get yours upon reaching your holiday destination. Almost all luggages looks alike and most people are in a hurry when they are traveling. Tie a colorful ribbon or colored tape on your baggage if you have the common styles and colors. If you travel very often you should consider a unique looking luggage that will stand out.Traveling during the holidays needs to be as smooth as possible to ensure you will enjoy your trip. By making an effort to follow these tips you can help make that happen. There are plenty of horror stories out there about people not being able to get to their destination for the holidays or they didn’t have the items they needed upon arriving. Do not open the door for your holiday vacation to fit into this grim category.
