The National Weather Service has extended a flash flood warning for Kauai as heavy rain continues to fall, causing flooding and at least one landslide.

The warning is in effect until 11:45 p.m. Sunday for East, North and South sides of the island, but may be extended further.

The NWS has also issued a flash flood advisory for Oahu, effective until late Sunday night and possibly into Monday morning.

Forecasters say radar showed that heavy rain continued to impact a large portion of the island of Kauai, primarily east of a line from Haena to Kalaheo. A rain gage in Hanalei recently reported rain falling at a rate of over two inches per hour and additional heavy rain is expected to develop through at least mid-afternoon.

Kauai Civil Defense officials have reported numerous road closures due to flooding and at least one landslide.

The landslide was reported on Kuhio Highway in Lumahai, near mile marker 5. Both lanes of the highway were closed, but have since reopened.  A crew from the State Department of Transportation Highways Division are on scene to remove boulders from the roadway.

The following roads have been closed due to flooding:
·         Kuhio Highway near Haena Beach Park (closed at 11:35 a.m.)
·         Kuhio Highway in the vicinity of the Hanalei Bridge

The roadways will be reopened when authorities deem they are safe for passage.

Power outages were also reported in Lihue and Wailua, but were since restored by Kaua’i Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC).

The American Red Cross has opened a shelter at Koloa Neighborhood Center for residents evacuated from their homes due to flooding.
